BAJA COASTAL INSTITUTE (BCI) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION REGISTERED IN BOTH MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES.
It was founded in 2014 by a group of residents, researchers, and visitors to this unique region, with the desire to give back a little of what the Southeast Region of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, has given them.
WE believe in:
The importance of research
Reliable information is the result of formal scientific research and is essential for us to plan a sustainable future in the region.
The power of education
By promoting the appreciation of our ecosystems and understanding the impact we have on them among the younger members of our community, we ensure a new generation of leaders motivated to protect them.
THE strength in community
By fostering strong partnerships among organizations, institutions, researchers, educators, students, and communities, we can make the best decisions for the Southeast region.
The value of transparency
We value above all else the trust that donors, collaborators, volunteers, participants, and partners place in us. For this reason, we always act in the best interest of everyone who lives here and communicate each of our actions with complete transparency.
At BCI, we believe it is possible to seek the growth of our communities while preserving the ecosystems and life that exist here today
How we do it
At BCI, we work to connect science, place-based conservation knowledge, and community well-being. We do this by:
We generate and support applied research
We promote and publish research on key issues for southeastern Baja California Sur—such as water, biodiversity, and the health of coastal ecosystems—in collaboration with scientists and academic institutions.
We support researchers and graduate students through logistical assistance, translation, and community engagement, helping them develop studies and theses with meaningful local impact.
We share knowledge and foster dialogue
We translate science into accessible information and share it through forums, public conversations, seminars, and outreach content.
We create spaces for exchange—such as the +AGUA forum—where community members, experts, and decision-makers come together to reflect, learn, and build solutions collaboratively.
We turn science into education and action
We work with educators to transform scientific information into teaching materials, curricula, and project- and place-based learning experiences, co-created with local teachers.
Through the Education for Action (EPA) program, we support students as they develop projects that respond to the environmental challenges of their own communities.
We support the implementation of place-based solutions
We promote green infrastructure projects and nature-based solutions—such as rain gardens—to improve water management and strengthen local resilience.
We participate in land-use planning committees and serve on the advisory council of the State Water Commission.
We strengthen community and partnerships
We are part of the Coalición Cabo Pulmo Vivo, working collaboratively to protect the Cabo Pulmo National Park and to promote planned, sustainable regional development.
We participate in alliances such as #Desplastifícate, promoting the reduction of single-use plastics in Baja California Sur.
We are part of the International Place-based Teaching and Learning Network.
We develop and maintain the Environmental Education Campus in Cabo Pulmo, a living space for workshops, gatherings, and educational experiences for both residents and visitors.
